Who is Linus Torvalds?

 


Linus Torvalds is a Finnish-American software engineer who created the Linux operating system. 


Life:


1. Early Life and Education: Torvalds was born in Helsinki, Finland, on December 28, 1969. He began programming at age 10 and attended the University of Helsinki, where he earned his master's degree in computer science in 1996.


2. Creation of Linux: In 1991, Torvalds started developing Linux as a Unix-like operating system. He released version 1.0 in 1994 and continues to oversee its development.


3. Career: Torvalds has worked at Transmeta and the Open Source Development Labs. He now works at the Linux Foundation, where he continues to develop and maintain Linux.


4. Awards and Recognition: Torvalds has received numerous awards, including the Millennium Technology Prize, IEEE Computer Society's Computer Pioneer Award, and the Internet Hall of Fame.


5. Personal Life: Torvalds is married to Tove Torvalds, a six-time Finnish national karate champion, and has three daughters. He holds dual citizenship of Finland and the United States.


6. Interests: Torvalds enjoys scuba diving and has created software for logging and planning dives called Subsurface.
